Singing for
The Sake of My Soul

About the Project

Through my project “Singing for the sake of my soul» I aim to bring classical music to a broader audience by fostering a deeper appreciation for the richness of our shared cultural heritage.

As a Norwegian mezzo-soprano with African American roots and a passion for art song and opera, I want to use my talent to expand the classical canon to include works by African diaspora composers, widening our understanding of what classical music has been, is and can be by sharing this rich and beautiful repertoire and tradition with a broader audience. I believe it is important to be able to see oneself in art, to find something that resonates, both as a
performer and as an audience member, and I believe greater knowledge of this repertoire and broader performance practices will increase engagement and interest in our art form among a diverse audience and ensure a rich and diverse classical Norwegian, Scandinavian and European music scene in the future.

I wish to expand our idea of how classical music can be presented through collaborations with visual artists, dancers, actors and audience engagement, creating a more immersive audience experience. The wonderful music I’ve chosen for this project centers the human voice in its purest form, the unamplified voice, a voice that lives and resonates in all of us and tells our stories. I believe it has the power to connect us through its shared, colorful vibrations and the ability to open new, and unexplored territory in us if we let it.

Having navigated the challenges of not fitting the conventional mold as an Afro-Norwegian opera singer, I understand

the significance of breaking barriers and fostering dialogue. My experience has taught me the importance of acknowledging blind spots in our pursuit of inclusivity. Meaning we are not all the same but we are equal.

There is room for all our lived experiences in this musical landscape and it will make us all richer. My aspiration is to leverage this understanding to cultivate brave spaces for us to have courageous conversations and open dialog.

I thought change would come then I realized I had to make it happen.
So I am here, and I am singing for the sake of my soul.
