Weary Blues
Composer/vokalist/flutist Trina Coleman has had a close relationship to the poetry of Langston Hughes, a decades-long fascination with the Harlem Renaissance period, and is a practitioner of the diverse musical heritages she has chosen to weave into this composition. Setting these texts to exist fluidly between genres creates a more vivid representation of this significant, empowering historical era.
The three singers performing this piece share a similar, multiethnic heritage of African American/European as Mr Hughes and resonate with his work on a deeply personal level. For the majority of the work, each singer embodies a specific style of classical, blues, or jazz as the poetic texts encapsulate some of the most powerful and intimate expressions of the African American and multi-ethnic experiences.
Premiers Saturday 5th of April
Other dates 9th, 10th and 12th of April

Petite Messe Solennelle
Gioachino Rossini's Petite messe solennelle (Little solemn Mass) was written in 1863. The composer, who had retired from composing operas more than 30 years before, described it as "the last of my péchés de vieillesse" (sins of old age).

Singing for the sake of my soul
Through my project “Singing for the sake of my soul» I aim to bring classical music to a broader audience by fostering a deeper appreciation for the richness of our shared cultural heritage. As a Norwegian mezzo-soprano with African American roots and a passion for art song and opera, I want to use my talent to expand the classical canon to include works by African diaspora composers, widening our understanding of what classical music has been, is and can be by sharing this rich and beautiful repertoire and tradition with a broader audience.
